Phoenix Rising changing the narrative on sex trafficking
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The nationally recognized organization Phoenix Rising is advocating and empowering sex trafficking victims while shedding light on the common misconception about how victims are trafficked.
A board member of the organization says that a lot of people think that this is something that is done by complete strangers, but the majority of human trafficking situations are familial. It can be closer than you think.
Mariah Yates, a Phoenix Rising board member, says, “We try to help people understand that no this is happening in our communities in our backyards, children that we are seeing going to our local schools that these things are happening to. Often times, even the children that are victims don’t even recognize themselves as victims.”
Yates also shared that there are many resources offered for people to learn how to communicate with victims. Visit phoenixrisingky.org/ for more information about Phoenix Rising.
