Free food in Franklin

FRANKLIN, Ky. – Three separate organizations were all giving out food today across Franklin to those in need.

At Jim Roberts Community Park, you would have seen Community Action out serving food drive-thru style to families based on income. Community Action is a non-profit that stands to break through hurdles citizens might have such as paying bills on time. News 40 spoke to Simpson County Community Action Coordinator, Melissa Collado about today.

Collado said she’s always loved helping people and when she was offered to move from Scottsville’s Community Education to Simpson County, she jumped right on it. Collado told us they do a monthly food giveaway from food they receive through Feeding America.

Further in town, Live The Proof was hosting their “super grocery store” where on the last Tuesday of every month, they ramp up the usual grocery store they do on Tuesdays. Founder of Live The Proof, Tammie McCory said he’s been homeless, addicted to drugs and knows very well how to serve the community he spent many years in, and now that he has more he wants to do more.

Just up the road from the church, the African American Heritage Center also gave out some food. They focus on the seniors in the county, giving out commodities to individuals 60 years of age and beyond in efforts to combat food insecurity among the older generation.

Sharon Taylor-Carrillo, the AAHC’s operations manager told News 40 she’s seen the need grow over the years when it comes to food. The manager said when she started 14 years ago there were only 52 people on the list to receive help, but now the list is well over 300, and that’s every month. She said it’s sad to see it growing but happy that they’re able to help.
