Back-to-school safety

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – We are just days away from the start of the new school year here in south central Kentucky. There are a few tips to consider as you get the kids ready for back to school, especially if you have a new student.

Keep in mind that buses will be back on the road in the morning and afternoon. Drivers need to slow down and remember that red flashing lights indicate students getting on or off the bus. Also, never pass a bus while its stopped.

Students should also be aware of how they’re getting home each day, whether its on the bus or someone picking them up.

Officials say they should also know their personal information.

Sherri McKinney, Red Cross TN director, says, “Make sure that your student understands their address, and that they can repeat it back to an adult. Also, be sure they know your phone or office number. Make sure that your child knows all those things so that whenever they’re asked, ‘Hey, how can I get a hold of your mom or dad?’, they’re ready to answer that.”

McKinney also reminds parents and students to obey all traffic signals and always cross at a crosswalk if walking to school.
If biking to school, always wear a helmet and travel on the right, the same way the traffic is flowing.
