Raising awareness for sexual assault and abuse victims
It’s a topic that most would rather avoid talking about, but sexual assault is real and it’s important to educate people to help prevent it.
Putting the HOPE in Hope Harbor.
Hope Harbor is a safe place in Bowling Green that provides services for victims of sexual assault and abuse.
From counseling, to legal advocacy, they provide over 400 victims each year with the help they need.
Since 2016, Hope Harbor says they have seen a 75 percent increase of sexual assault victims.
“There is a fear, there is an embarrassment, there’s that understanding of ‘I am not going to be believed’ or it’s just so overwhelming sometimes that they can’t even imagine that it has happened, none the less to even try to talk about it.” says Dr. Linda Domerese, the Director of Clinical Services at Hope Harbor.
Victims can be women, children, and men
Hope Harbor believes recent news stories have shed light on sexual violence and lets survivors know they are not alone.
“It’s probably because of the stories that are in the news and that people have seen on social media and feel like they have a voice and their voice can be heard even if it’s not publicly. They can share their story and get healing and services that they need.” says Melissa Whitley, the Executive Director of Hope Harbor.
It’s important for victims to come forward, but only when they are ready.
Hope Harbor wants to educate the community on awareness and prevention.
“No matter how many times people try to push it under the rug and say ‘Oh its just that good ole boys syndrome’ or whatever it is, it exists. Believe the victim. Our job is to advocate for the victim. I hate the word victim, but to be advocates for that individual. It’s difficult enough for the individual to discuss what has happened, but to believe them, walk them through the process and be there for them. Be that listening ear, to let them know you can and that you’re listening." adds Dr. Domerese
