Autistic, highly creative Barren Co. 6th grader awarded thanks to teacher’s nomination

BARREN COUNTY, Ky. – One autistic, Barren County Middle school student won statewide recognition for his creativity, all thanks to his teacher going the extra mile.

North Jackson 6th grader Bobby Kidd is an exceptional ‘Kidd’ – diagnosed with autism and tested to qualify as ‘gifted and talented’ in creativity.

Bobby’s Exceptional Child teacher, Mrs. Emma Taylor nominated him for a  Kentucky Council for Exceptional Children award. She edited and submitted a video of Bobby building, gluing, ripping, and indulging in his love of art, and she wrote a short essay on why he should win.

Sure enough, Bobby is the newest “Yes I Can” award winner.

Bobby’s school filled up the gym and cheered him on when he won. He enjoyed the recognition balloons, candy, and a sea of applause.

Mrs. Taylor said, “He makes his classmates smile, and I’m super super excited that not only does our room get to see all of Bobby’s reactions, but our school, and now the state of Kentucky get to see them!”

When News 40 asked Bobby what inspired his creativity, he answered, “I just love art. I like drawing, I like ripping and gluing  and cutting.”

Bobby already has his next piece all planned out, envisioning the fine details of the airplane he’ll soon build. Of course, we can’t be shocked that he wants to be an artist when he grows up.
