Yard sale offers 400 miles of shopping

BOWLING GREEN Ky.-A shopping experience that spreads for 400 miles across Kentucky’s historic highway 68, the 15th annual 400-mile sale began today and extends through Sunday.

The sale includes something for all interests, including clothing, books, music and entertainment. Each location uses the money from the vendors for specific causes, and members of the Jennings Creek elementary parent teacher organization Adam Vance said this sale is a good opportunity to raise money towards a playground.

“Here at Jennings Creek, the PTO, we’re trying to raise money for a playground still. We’re trying to copy Rockfield a little bit with what they do, selling spots for the 68- and 80-yard sale, which is usually pretty popular,” Vance said.

At Rockfield Elementary in Bowling Green, vendor Johnny Watkins said the sale being spread across so many locations is beneficial to anyone needing to fundraise, as the event brings in a lot of visitors, some of which are visiting from outside of Bowling Green.

“You get to meet a lot of great people, and it does a lot for the school system because they always need money for funds and things that go on in the school. All the money that the vendors pay to set up here goes to the Rockfield PTO. Where else can you meet people from probably 20 different states, 15 different states,” Watkins said.

Shopper Jeanette Stephens came from Tompkinsville, and said this sale is her way of not only finding great sales, but also finding great friends.

“You get to meet so many incredible people, so many incredible life stories that you’re not aware of, that people are on this for whatever the reasons may be,” Stephens said.

While the yard sale stretches for 400 miles, Stephens said the experience brings people closer than ever.

“This is a connection to everyone and everything and every genre when you’re out on this big sale. It’s just the experience. It’s just fun,” Stephens said.
