Bowling Green City Commission honors Joe Denning

BOWLING GREEN, Ky.- Bowling Green’s city commission recognized one of their own on Tuesday.

Commissioners proclaimed June 4 as Joe Denning Day.

On June 4, 1969, 50 years ago, Commissioner Denning was sworn in as the city of Bowling Green’s first African American police officer.

In the years following his work on the police force, Denning joined the city commission and became Bowling Green’s first African American mayor in 2011.

The city commission surprised Denning with the proclamation at Tuesday’s meeting.
