Summer camps help offset learning loss

BOWLING GREEN Ky.- Summer means it’s time to get out of the classroom, and into summer camps.

The end of school is approaching, but not the end of learning. Several summer camps are held throughout the South-Central Kentucky area, offering different learning experiences while the kids are out of the classroom. Riverview at Hobson Grove will be holding a dining etiquette summer camp, and executive director Brooke Wescott Peterson said this is just one of the educational summer camp experiences in the area.

“It’s great to keep them engaged and keep the wheels turning and make sure they have something to do to stay occupied so that they’re not bored during the summer. Bowling Green offers a wide variety of camps to choose from. Anything that children are interested in, you’re likely to find a good fit here,” Peterson said.

The Boys and Girls Clubs of Bowling Green also have a popular summer program. Chief executive officer of the Boys and Girls Clubs, Liz Bernard, said kids sometimes suffer from summer learning loss during summer break, and summer camps are a great way to keep the brains working in a fun way.

“We know that summer learning loss is a real thing.  The more that you can keep them dialed in and focused on that academic piece the better. What we like to do is sneak it in with fun. They’re having fun, but they’re learning as well,” Bernard said.

In skill building, relationship forming and making summer count, Bernard said summer camps are crucial to a child’s educational and social development.

“We’re just very excited to be able to offer this to our kids in this Warren County community. It’s so critical, and I would just encourage parents to start early. Get your kids signed up for something, even if it’s not Boys and Girls Club. It is a critical piece and parents need help. We’re here to kind of bridge the gap and help assist where we can,” Bernard said.
