Derby comes to Potter Gray elementary

BOWLING GREEN Ky.-Students at Potter Gray Elementary not only had the chance to learn about the Kentucky Derby but to live it out.

As part of derby education week, the students have crafted their very own horses that they used to participate in a big race that took place at the school. Educators like instructional assistant Beth Butt said this experience is a great hands on way for the students to learn about the derby.

“They get to learn all about the horse racing itself and run for the roses. They learn about all the different things that go into the derby, like all about the derby and facts about the derby, and it’s just really cool,” said Butt.

For the students who are striving to become jockeys themselves, this race was also a dream come true for student and champion Asa Buchanan.

“When I saw people happy on the news, I always watch the news in the morning. They’re talking about the big race that’s coming up, and they show all the people who have been winning, and I’ve seen the happy faces on them,” said Buchanan.

And it’s one step closer to making that dream a reality.

“I just dream of having my own horse and going to that derby,” said Buchanan.

Not only has the race taught the students about the history of the derby, but also the number one trait it takes to be a true jockey one day.

“I learned that not giving up when you’re last place and you just gotta speed up. No matter what, if you lose you gotta keep on going and help your dreams come true,” said Buchanan.
