Kindergarten and preschool registration underway in city schools
BOWLING GREEN Ky.- As school starts to wrap up for the summer, educators see this as a new start for upcoming students. During the preschool and kindergarten pre-registration week, parents of incoming young students can meet with future teachers, in addition to getting all the needed documents to the school. These include a copy of the student’s birth certificate and Social Security card.
Potter Gray kindergarten teacher Christina Price says this week is important because it’s the first step in a child’s educational journey.
“They soak in so much at this age. They are like little sponges, so the sooner we start teaching them and introducing them to the things of the world and the ways of the world, the better for them in the long run,” said Price.
In addition to their young minds being impressionable, Potter Gray counselor Shawna Garrett explains some of the essential skills learned in pre-school.
“One great thing about preschool is just social skills. Getting along with your peers, working in a small group together, working one on one with your teacher. When a teacher says line up, what is a line? A lot of those social skills are important because it’s part of life. If you’ve had preschool, it will give you a jump start into kindergarten,” Garrett said.
While there are other ways to enrich the mind of a young learner, Garrett says pre-school will get students just the start they need in their educational careers.
“If a child were to qualify for pre-school, you have got stellar teachers that have excellent training that are going to meet your child’s needs. Sometimes there’s a speech delay or a developmental delay, and they can work on targeting those needs. it gives them an opportunity to fall in love with school,” Garrett said.
