7-year-old leukemia survivor spreads hope after beating the odds

BOWLING GREEN, Ky.- A local 7-year-old girl is inspiring her community after bravely overcoming a long battle with leukemia.

Avery Paynter was diagnosed with B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia, or ALL, when she was just 3 years old. Her early symptoms included fatigue, fever and bruising, but her family never imagined the diagnosis that would follow.

Avery’s grandmother, Patti Paynter, remembers the day she learned the life-changing news.

“I got the call from my son telling me that she had leukemia,” Patti Paynter said. “It was something no family ever wants to hear.”

For two years, Avery underwent chemotherapy and immunotherapy treatments at Norton Children’s Hospital. Doctors say those procedures can be painful, but young patients are kept as comfortable as possible.

“They typically don’t have pain during the procedure and don’t remember it afterwards,” said Judith Kabat, an associate professor involved in pediatric care.

Throughout her recovery, Avery leaned on her family, friends and medical team for strength. Despite the challenges, she remained cheerful and hopeful.

“It was really fun,” Avery said. “We played games and made each other laugh.”

Her mother, Stephanie Paynter, said the transformation has been remarkable.

“Four years ago, we didn’t know if she’d ever walk again,” she said. “Now she’s living her best life.”

Today, Avery enjoys art, school and spending time with her sister, Audrey, who calls her a hero.

“Stay strong,” Audrey said. “Avery will always be my biggest hero.”

With her positive spirit and resilience, Avery Paynter continues to bring hope and joy to everyone around her—proof that courage and love can carry a family through even the toughest battles.
