32 inches of rain water floods church basement
BOWLING GREEN, Ky.- The Unitarian Universalist Church off of Nashville Road fell victim to the flooding on Sunday night.
The entire front yard of the church was underwater, reaching the building. There is a deep depression in front of the church, which causes flood waters to gather in the wooded area out in front.
Rainwater also flooded the basement of the church, destroying the children’s room with an estimated 32 to 38 inches of sitting water. The adjoining building had a couple of leaks in the brand new roof.
Right now, the church has been offering only virtual services due to the pandemic. But President of the Board of Directors Richard Thornton says in order to fix it before members come back, it could cost upwards of $100,000.
“I guess luckily we’re not in session. But it’s going to be very expensive to pump out and replace drywall and replace equipment that we’ve lost,” said Thornton.
They had a wall put up in 2010, when it flooded once before. Thornton says they will now have to invest in a higher one.
