1 dead in fireworks-related explosion in Somerset

SOMERSET, Ky. – One person is dead after an explosion at a Pulaski County home.

Around 10 a.m. Sunday morning, crews responded to the 200 block of Hidden Crest Drive in Somerset, Kentucky for a reported explosion.

First responders say they found one man dead at the scene.

In a press release, Pulaski County sheriff Bobby Jones says they found a garage behind a home destroyed in an explosion, along with damage in other parts of the neighborhood.

The cause of the explosion is believed to involved fireworks and other material inside of the garage.

According to first responders on the scene, the neighborhood, which is just off of Highway 27, was blocked off from people other than residents and emergency personnel.

A firefighter with Parker’s Mill Fire Department, Cody Weddle, says there were calls all over Pulaski County that said they had heard the explosion.

Weddle said the cause of the explosion is still under investigation by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms.

The sheriff’s office will continue a death investigation.

There is no longer a threat to the public, according to Jones, however, the public is asked to avoid the area due to an ongoing investigation.
