Skeletal remains found in Simpson County identified as protected Native American burial site

FRANKLIN, Ky. – A set of skeletal remains discovered in a Simpson County cave has now been identified.

Simpson County Sheriff Jere Dee Hopson confirms that an investigation with the Kentucky State Medical Examiner’s Office, the University of Kentucky, and the Kentucky Heritage Council found that the set of remains is part of a Native American burial site.

Hopson says the cave has a very small entrance and can only be accessed with proper climbing equipment. After this discovery, it was determined that the site should remain undisturbed.

The site is protected by law. Out of respect for its cultural and historical significance, the exact location is not being disclosed.
