Parents as Teachers program prepares kids for future

To children, parents are known as providers and supporters.

In Bowling Green, some parents are also playing the role of teachers.

The Family Enrichment Center offers many programs to the community.

And there’s one that allows parents to educate kids.

But also prepare them for a successful school career and future.

That’s the Parents as Teachers program.

This program serves as an in-home parent education service.

This was made possible through a partnership with Warren County Schools.

Warren County Schools, for the first time, presented the Family Enrichment Center with 80,000 dollars in funding.

However, this program is strictly offered to county feeder elementary schools under Warren East and Central.

Parents as Teachers offers in-home visits and group activities that focus on literacy.

It also provides referral to services and screenings.

The screenings determine whether the kid will reach his or her milestones.

The program targets kids from pregnancy to 5 years old.

We spoke to Lynn Hulsey, the Director of Programs.

Hulsey says pregnancy to 5 years old is when statistically kids need the most investment.

She also says one of the best parts about the program is that the in-parent teachers become more than teachers to the kids.

That they build trust and relationships with families that will last a lifetime.
