LeBron James opens new school in Akron

Just because NBA star LeBron James is LA bound to continue his career with the Lakers, it doesn’t mean his heart isn’t still in his hometown of Akron, Ohio.

One of James’ biggest dreams came to fruition on Monday.

The LeBron James Family Foundation and the Akron Public Schools launched a new school with a focus on educating children from challenging situations or backgrounds.

The "I Promise School" has been ten years in the making and it follows LeBron’s program of granting college scholarships to students from Akron who come through its program.

The school will begin with two grades, third and fourth, with plans to expand in the coming years.

Lebron hopes that more than 1,200 children will pass through the "I Promise" program and into college by 2029.

James has donated millions to the project and is working to secure support through corporate and educational sponsors.
