Research monkey shortage undermines US readiness, panel says

A new report says a shortage of monkeys available for medical research undermines U.S. readiness to respond to public health emergencies. An influential scientific advisory panel said Thursday it’s better for the U.S to breed more research animals than rely on imports of them. Supplies tightened when the pandemic hit and China quit exporting research monkeys. While monkey research is controversial, it’s proved critical for lifesaving advances and the government says there aren’t always alternatives.
