EU weighs China policy amid concern over Hong Kong moves
BRUSSELS (AP) — European Union foreign ministers are weighing how to manage increasingly testy relations with China as it asserts more control over Hong Kong. Recent allegations of Chinese pressure on EU officials have also raised tensions a notch. But the 27 EU nations are very divided in their approach to Beijing. While they concede that a firm policy might be needed they are also reluctant to damage business ties with a major strategic partner. No talk of real EU action, let alone sanctions, is likely during Friday’s video-conference. The EU is, however, united in its condemnation of China’s clampdown in Hong Kong.
