Eastern Congo hit by rebel attacks; 45 civilians killed

GOMA, Congo (AP) — Local authorities say the death toll from several attacks this week by extremist rebels in eastern Congo has risen to at least 45 people. Saidi Balikwisha, provincial deputy of North Kivu province, said that dozens of people were killed by rebels wielding machetes over a two-day period. He blamed the Allied Democratic Forces, a militia with links to the Islamic State group for killing civilians in several villages in North Kivu province. On Thursday, dozens of people were buried in a mass grave in Mukondi. They had been killed by gunshots, knives and machetes.
