Kentucky Downs' expansion will increase city's tourism

Posted: Updated:
Franklin, KY -

The ownership of Kentucky Downs has filed an application with the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission.

This is an effort to build a new standardbred track and also expand the existing track in Franklin, Kentucky.

This will not only create more revenue for Kentucky Downs but boost tourism in the city.

The plan for the new standardbred track is for it to be named Oak Grove Meadows.

Resting on 80 acres, it will be built near the intersection of Interstate 24 and U.S. 41-A.

This is close in proximity to Fort Campbell and Clarksville, Tennessee.

Kentucky Downs will contribute $45 million dollars to the Oak Grove project.

Also, they will provide an additional $25 million dollars to the major expansion of the existing track.

The track would race 15 days from October 11th to November 10th, 2019.

The expansion at Kentucky Downs will include doubling the size of the main building, constructing a state-of-the-art equestrian complex and more.

All which the President of Kentucky Downs Corey Johnsen says will increase tourism.

Johnsen also tells us that the global design and architectural firm Populous has been retained for Oak Grove Meadows and the Kentucky Downs expansion.

Populous is known for the renovation and expansion of world-class facilities such as Ascott Racecourse and Yankee Stadium.
