The quarter acre of fenced in land located right in the heart of Auburn has been the meeting place for several pups and their owners since opening around two weeks ago.
One dog owner utilizing the park, Amanda Smith-Gaspar says, “we’ve met people here, but then a lot of times we just plan to meet up out here. There’s a few of us that are neighbors and we just plan to meet up out here for a few minutes.”
A few minutes and a few saved miles—the first dog park in Logan County is not only a relief to the furry four-legged friends, but to their owners as well.
“I have two dogs and we would take them to the dog park in Bowling Green, but its kind of far,” Amanda says, “so this is just down the street.”
Auburn Mayor Mike Hughes says they’ve spent around fourteen thousand dollars so far on the project.
“There were a lot of people in town that requested it,” Mayor Hughes says, “we still have some work to do on it. We’ve got some benches ordered and are going to put some concrete down for them. We’ll have some additional parking and dog water [station], that have been ordered as well.”
The city has applied for grant money in hopes to keep adding more features to the park that will keep the dog owners of Auburn, in the city, and not having to travel to Bowling Green for a day at the park.
“We’d like to see a gazebo and maybe expand the dog park,” Mayor Hughes explains, “Most people in this community have a dog and have pets and we advocate for that and want places for them to bring them to our city park and have fun.”
Amanda agrees, “it makes Auburn a place where you can stay and do things. You don’t always have to be traveling to Bowling Green.”
The new dog park is located on Amanda Gordon Road in Auburn just by the football field.
